Shubo’s story
On Saturday 11th September, I will be running the Kew Gardens 10K to raise awareness about the root causes of obesity.
The global prevalence of obesity has nearly tripled since 1975. Today, it is recognised as one of the most important public health problems the world is facing.
Obesity is a global disease. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) there are approximately 2 billion adults overweight, of whom 650 million are affected by obesity. In 2016, it was estimated that 41 million children under the age of 5 were living with overweight or obesity.
Obesity is rising in every country and its global economic impact amounts to roughly $2 trillion annually, or 2.8 percent of global GDP—nearly equivalent to the global impact of smoking or of armed violence, war, and terrorism.
World Obesity Federation is working with its members to halt the rise of the obesity, fight vested interests and transform the systems that are leading to the current pandemic. Our research shows how the drivers behind obesity are the same as those that underlie under-nutrition and climate change: a system that privileges wealth over health. We need social, economic and food systems transformation.
To meet our ambitious goals we need your support!
