Anthony’s story
Ok so as many of you know, I have actually completed this challenge now…
A quick back story. The plan was to walk the Offa’s Dyke Path raising money for the Friends of John Blow School charity who in turn, raise funds for John Blow Primary School, the local school in my village, the school which I attended as a lad and the school my son now attends.
Unfortunately, the charity’s registration with the Wonderful.org fundraising platform lapsed during the pandemic and were unable to get the re-registration complete before I completed my challenge.
All Facebook friends of mine have seen my many posts on the challenge and they are still there to see if you check out my (Anthony Pipes) Facebook profile page. The posts are public so should be viewable to all.
Onto the challenge. The Offa’s Dyke Path is a 177 mile route following Offa’s Dyke, which roughly follows the border of England and Wales, going from Chepstow in the south to Prestatyn in the north. I can tell you having now actually complete it that it is extremely hilly!
Most people’s itineraries for completing the Offa’s Dyke Path are 12 to 14 days. I tackled it in 10. The final day saw me take on 25 miles and over 1500m of elevation gain, that’s more elevation gain than climbing Ben Nevis.
Some statistics from my Garmin records, not counting the 2.5 miles of the trail that I walked on the Saturday I arrived in Chepstow. In 10 days I:
•Walked a total of 183.7 miles walked.
•Climbed a total of 9208m of elevation gain over the course of the 10 days. That’s more than the summit of Everest (8848m). That’s also the equivalent of climbing Snowdon 10 times in 10 days (Llanberis path 7 times at 948m elevation gain and Rhys Ddu path 3 times at 859m elevation gain gets you pretty close).
The 25 mile day saw me tread over 55,000 steps.
I appreciate, the challenge has now finished and usually donations are made during it, but if you think that what I have done is worthy of a few quid, please donate. I know times have been tough and don’t expect anyone to break the bank, but the FOJBS charity like any other charity have not been able to raise funds of late so every penny counts.
Thanks
