Harriet’s story
Hello! Thank you for finding your way onto my fundraising page - I have attached a video in BSL explaining why I have decided to run a marathon and included a transcript below, I am very grateful for any donations and encouragement so thank you!
[Transcript of video] Hello! My name is Harriet. My sign name is *signs name*. This video is to let you know about the marathon I'm doing.
It's on the 29th May and I'm doing it with my twin sister Annabel. It'll be my first marathon! We're doing the marathon in Edinburgh, Scotland.
I'm raising money for a charity called Deaf Ex Mainstreamers 'DEX'. They Support deaf people and are a place to meet other deaf people. They offer support in work and help to build confidence in deaf identities. DEX is important to me as when at university studying nursing my hearing deteriorated and I now wear two hearing aids. I started working in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic and found communication difficult as I normally lipread. Normally thats fine but with masks thats difficult. Masks mean lipreading is impossible! I struggled at work, for example, giving medication, getting medical histories etc. Clear communication is so important, I asked my managers for support and they were confused about how to support deaf staff. This was the first time they had had a deaf member of staff. I have help from Access to Work, they gave me funding for BSL interpreters. However, I didn't really feel 'deaf enough' for interpreters.
There is a big change now, DEX helped me build a deaf identity. I have an amazing team of interpreters at work, they help me when I meet patients and am talking with staff - my interpreters really are amazing! DEX are important to me because they helped build my deaf identity and built my confidence. I would really appreciate if you could sponsor me and DEX would be able to support more deaf people.
Thank you so much for watching (reading!) Now to start training for the marathon!
