Jed’s story
In January my family were rocked with the news that my mother was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). So i have decided to challenge myself and run 50 km around the Suffolk countryside. i will be raising money for Challenging MND (CMND) and there is more information on the work this wonderful charity does for sufferers of MND below.
Challenging MND are a charity founded by Alex Gibson an ex-GB Decathlete post his diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease in his mid-thirties. His positive approach has inspired many and you can read more about his World Record Breaking challenges at www.challengingmnd.org.
The initial mission of Challenging MND was to create lifelong memories through provision of challenge or activity of choice, (with the option for the experience to be through Virtual reality for those with limited mobility), in respect of the individual living with MND and their loved ones.
CMND aim to deliver what the MND community ask for by listening to each family directly to ascertain what type of support they can offer, to make the greatest impact on their lives. It may be creating a lifelong memory or a quality of life grant or signposting them to other MND specialists. The most unique of our offers are for the family carers.
Family carers, who over the course of their loved one’s illness, (average 4 years), will have some really tough times and are often forgotten. Many feel exhausted, overwhelmed, isolated and can hit crisis point.
To best avoid carer crisis CMND look to improve family carer resilience by funding respite (paying professional home care to support the person living with MND), which allows family carers the opportunity to recharge their batteries, so that they can continue to support their loved one. This unique, bespoke support allows the family carer:
-Regular time away knowing there is a professional carer at home with their
loved one.
-Paid for Holistic wellbeing treatment e.g. reflexology/head massage or
other..
-To reduce social isolation incurred by their caring role
-To ultimately to avoid carer burnout.
