Joanne’s story
So, between Christmas and New Year, I did something very silly. I signed up for a Half Marathon, 5 months away, meaning training would be in the winter. I have always said that I will never run, I can't run and I'm not built to run. My gym buddies have challenged me with this last year and I took part in Ilkley 5k run in July and Leeds Abbey Dash 10k in November. I haven't run since (until a training plan became a thing 4 weeks ago). I've set this as my personal challenge for this year. I'm not competing with anyone, I don't have a time to beat, I would just like to conquer it and hopefully run for all of it. I've found training so far to be brutal but my discipline has carried me through.... even in sleet, rain and fog. The Rob Burrows Leeds Marathon motto is to 'run for a mate, with a mate.' Now, my running coach mate is taking part in the full marathon and my gym mates have ditched me. So, I've decided to run it to raise money for some of my other mates, who face challenges as a part of their daily lives. The mates who have inspired me to find joy in the little things, every day and to keep on keeping on, as they do.
As a SEN parent, this is a local charity whose mission means a lot. I'd love to be able to contribute towards some funding to facilitate some of their adventures this year. LS29 Group is a registered charity for families who have children with additional needs living in the local area, offering support, activities and fun!
We organise a wide range of outings and activities throughout the year for families who have children and young people with additional needs. Our aim is to provide opportunities for the whole family to take part and try new experiences they may not otherwise have the chance to take part in, meet friends and develop a support network and of course, have fun.
