EARLY INTERVENTION IN PSYCHOSIS’s story
The Early Intervention in Psychosis Service (EIS for short) have set up a fundraising page to support young people and adults who are experiencing psychosis related difficulties for the first time.
We are setting up an ‘activity therapy’ fund for the kids, young people and adults we support in our NHS Manchester Early Intervention in Psychosis service. Any money you can spare will be used to help people experiencing a mental health crisis for the first time, to take part in activities that we hope will have a positive impact on their well-being.
Who’s doing what for the sponsorship?
This time Emily Hughes, Mental Health Social Worker, Care Coordinator and amateur foot-mover, is taking on a half marathon in Heaton Park on 14th January 2024. That’s 21ish KM or 13.1miles of looping around the park and tackling all the nasty hills.
Previous team fundraising has been done by the one and only John Mulligan, EIS Clinical Psychologist, by running Marathons and risking his VERY LIFE in a boxing match that will go down in the history books. His valiant and positive-risk taking efforts have raised the £1,300 you can already see in the fundraising pot.
What will you be spending the money on?
Our most recent fundraising push and urgent cry for sponsorship moneys by Emily was inspired by the plight of our weekly football group. This group is run by our award winning Nurse and qualified football coach, Rob Briggs, who runs a weekly football session, along with his assistant coach, a service-user and was trained up to be Rob’s second in command by attending regularly.
The group invites players of all ages, abilities and genders to attend to support their mental health recovery, through team work, socialising, getting out and about, and just playing a good game of football! Our funding to rent the pitch every week has come to an end so we’re looking to find ways to get it up and running again
You’ll see that our fundraising goal is a little more ambitious than our football group. The fancy plan is to raise £8,000 initially so we can send a group of our service users on a 5 day sailing adventure (see the amazing work of the staff at Cirdan Sailing charity and their voyage to recovery: https://fb.watch/m2Ese3Jgt7/ ).
Other things that money in this fund will support with is paying for people who are often housebound or struggling financially to get out and socialise, hiring a minibus to get out walking in the countryside. Or just having a fund to do things like paying for someone’s meal or coffee if they’ve not been out of the house for quite a while – which, more often than we’d care to admit, are paid by our wonderful practitioners in the team out of their own pocket.
Another idea we discussed is potentially substituting 5 days of navigating the high seas of Britain for some groups getting a therapeutic day out on a canal boat, navigating the discarded shopping trolleys of the Manchester ship canal (trolley spotting will just be a small part of the day).
So if you can afford a donation then it will be spent by our staff directly on people who will appreciate and benefit greatly from your investment.
