Linda’s story
5th Sept 2026
Since the news of the devastating floods in Nepal, Gorkha Development Scheme has been working closely with our sister charity, GDHEDS, in Gorkha to understand where support is needed most. Through existing relationships with neighbouring communities and local organisations, specific requests have now been received for up to £5,000 to purchase items to help those in desperate need following the floods. The team have now sourced the essential items including clothing, blankets, water purification supplies and hygiene products and they work to arrange transport from Kathmandu to the devastated area. Please follow us on Facebook/Instagram /Website for updates. Thank you.
Background
On 26th August 2026, a catastrophic glacial collapse in northern Nepal triggered devastating flooding along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems. Entire communities were overwhelmed by a powerful surge of water, mud and debris, causing widespread destruction across the region.
Thousands of people have been affected by the disaster. Homes, roads, bridges, schools and essential infrastructure have been damaged or destroyed, and many families have lost loved ones or remain separated from family members.
Although Gorkha was not directly hit by the initial flood, the impact is being felt deeply within the communities we support. Many people from Gorkha district were travelling to festivals and pilgrimage events at the time of the disaster, and families are coping with uncertainty, loss and grief. Long-standing social and family connections between Gorkha and neighbouring districts mean that many local people have relatives and friends among those affected.
As a small charity with strong local relationships, GDS always aims to respond thoughtfully. Rather than making rushed decisions from the UK, we are taking time to listen to our trusted partners on the ground and understand where support will have the greatest impact.
Whatever form our response takes, our commitment to you is that every penny raised through this appeal will be used to support people in Nepal.
Every donation will make a difference.
Thank you for supporting the people of Nepal at this difficult time.
