Mark’s story
My daughter Lucy has an opportunity to go to the Kandersteg International Scout Centre in Switzerland this year with her Explorer Scouts. I'm doing my bit for the fundraising effort and have decided to embark on a couple of challenges to kick start myself into getting fit again.
Starting with cycling round the Isle of Wight on the 4th May. I've done this before, 7 years ago, but back then I was cycling every day. This time I'm 7 years older and rarely cycle at all, so this will be a lot harder. For comparison I cycled 40 miles of relatively flat cycling the other day and thought it was the worst idea I'd ever had. The ride is 66 miles and around 5000ft of elevation.
Assuming I make it round then the following Sunday I'll be walking across the Island doing around 27 miles (technically an Ultra) in a day, with about 3000ft of elevation. Since doing this last year then my longest walk has been about 18 miles on relative flat so again I'll be pushing myself and expecting to be hobbling over the line with a hiking pole swearing never again.
Anything in excess of the fundraising target will go to the 2nd Southampton Scout Group.
