It's time to bring them home.
This May, I'm fundraising for Amnesty International in support of dual-nationals unjustly detained in Iran.
Over recent years, Iranian authorities have used their powers to detain and imprison multiple British-Iranian citizens, seemingly out of the blue. Many of these individuals, are yet to make it back to the UK, after simply attempting to visit relatives.
The most well-known of these cases is that of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who has been imprisoned and unable to see her husband or daughter since 2016. Unfortunately, Nazanin is not the only person who has found themselves in this situation. There are thought to be up to 20 dual-nationals currently detained in Iran.
Anoosheh Ashoori is a British-Iranian engineer who was detained in 2017 whilst visiting his mother. Anoosheh is 67 and showing signs of COVID, but has not been granted medical furlough. There are reports of poor hygiene practices and severe lack of medical attention inside the notorious Evin prison.
Iranian authorities have made accusations of 'spying', 'propaganda' and attempts to 'overthrow the regime' to justify such imprisonments. Critics report that these individuals are in fact being detained as leverage in negotiations over a 40-year debt which the UK still owes to Iran for the delivery of a large number of military tanks during the Iranian Revolution.
All in all, nothing about these stories resembles the lives of peace and freedom we all take for granted here in the UK.
My chosen charity, Amnesty International, is working hard to campaign for the release of these individuals, who according to all apparent evidence, are completely innocent.
I'll be using the freedom's denied to people like Anoosheh and Nazanin to walk, run and cycle as far as I possibly can this May to raise funds for Amnesty.
