NPUK’s story
NPUK Webinar: Childhood Dementia – A Call to Action
Featuring:
Dr Chris Knifton – Learning Disability Nurse, Dementia Specialist, and Associate Professor of Neurocognitive and Neurodevelopmental Care, De Montfort University, Leicester.
Overview:
Over 145 neurodegenerative conditions – most of them genetic – can cause childhood dementia, including Batten disease, Sanfilippo syndrome, Metachromatic leukodystrophy, and Niemann-Pick type C.
This free webinar will explore some of the more common ways these conditions affect children - including changes in movement, memory, speech, learning, and behaviour -and will discuss the challenges around terminology and the need for a shared umbrella term. It will also highlight the lack of recognition and understanding of childhood dementia within the wider community, particularly when compared with adult-onset dementia.
Our aim is to raise awareness and improve recognition of this important yet often overlooked area, so we can use our collective voice to drive its inclusion in policy, practice, care, treatment, education, and research. Children with dementia - and the families and professionals who support them - need our help too.
Who should attend:
This webinar will be of particular interest to those who have never heard of childhood dementia before, or those seeking more information. It will centre stage the trail-blazing work done already by the Australian Childhood Dementia Initiatives and other organisations such as Alzheimer Scotland, and the work they do to advocate for the children/young adults affected and their families. It will also support attendees to look at the commonalities and differences between adult onset versus childhood onset dementia.
Why your support matters:
NPUK recently lost its offices and 34 years of history in a devastating fire. While we rebuild, we remain committed to raising awareness of Niemann-Pick and other causes of childhood dementia. The webinar is FREE to attend, but if you’re able, please consider a donation to help us recover and continue our work.
Our sincere thanks to Dr Chris Knifton for kindly donating his time and expertise to raising awareness of childhood dementia and supporting our fire recovery efforts.
