Howard’s story
My cycling buddy Paul will be joining me on Saturday 26th August 2023 as we cycle the boundary of Lambeth borough - clock-wise and then anti-clockwise. The distance will be approximately 50 miles. Donations can only be made by a bank account (not credit card) via the Donate Now link.
I am raising money for the Ashdon Jazz Academy - a registered charity that inspires and empowers around 150 young women a year in Lambeth, Lewisham, Croydon and Merton. The charity has 30 trained volunteer mentors, provides drop-in sessions at West Norwood (weekly) and Pollards Hill (bi-weekly), holiday programmes and other events for vulnerable young women aged 11-21 years. In summer 2022 the charity took 16 girls to The Gambia for a learning experience. The aim is to improve self-esteem and confidence to minimise the negative challenges faced by young women today.
The charity started in 2015 Patricia Hewitt a year after the tragic death of her daughter Ashdon who ended her life aged 14 years. As a teenager Ashdon (who liked to be called 'Jazz') struggled with peer pressure, peer aggression at school and lacked confidence about being herself in a society that pressurises young women to be and act a certain way.
The charity needs just over £2,000 a week to maintain all the programmes of support. Together we can make a real difference. Thank you in advance for any contribution you can make to this amazing work that means so much to me.
Thank you, Howard (Volunteer)
