Dan’s story
My close family created and run the Butterfly AVM Charity, founded a decade ago to fight back against AVMs, a disease that affects my cousin Nikki, who despite enormous adversity is a legend and inspiration to her family and her millions of social media followers.
My training
The event I am doing is a 2 Day cycle event in Cyprus from Paphos into the Cypriot mountains (160km and 3.3km climbing, nearly 2X Troodos, Cyprus's highest mountain). To be ready for Cyprus I have been training outdoors through wind, ice, rain and cold to be ready for this challenge. So far this year my training has been the equivalent of 10 times around the M25 (1,800km+) or nearly 1.5 times up Everest (12km climbs), and a significantly reduced alcohol and cake intake. I think I am ready but it is a race and so will be a proper step up challenge even for me as someone who loves to ride their bike.
About AVMs
Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is an abnormal connection between arteries and veins, bypassing the capillary system. This vascular anomaly is widely known because of its occurrence in the central nervous system (usually cerebral AVM), but can appear in any location.
Why fundraising
By using wonderful.org 100% of the money raised will go to the Charity, which is the main source of funding research into AVMs. The charity funds researchers, PhD Students and paying for specific equipment that is vital to their work.
The amazing researchers work in conjunction with Great Ormond Street Hospital, University College of London, Royal Free Hospital and the Francis Crick Institute. Their charities target is to breakdown the boundaries using cutting edge research and the provide the help that is needed to understand the genetic structure of AVMs and search for definitive treatments and hopefully, one day, the cure.
Fundraising Targets
All funds raised will be passed to the charity irrespective of whether my target is reached, not reached or exceeded.
Payment Security
