High Peak Scouts’s story
We are five young people from the High Peak who have been selected to attend the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea in August 2023. The event is a once in a lifetime opportunity and will be a very valuable and life-changing experience. It is a chance to meet and connect with over 40,000 scouts across the globe, resulting in lifelong friendships and shared experiences. As well as getting the chance to meet new people, we will be exposed to a new and completely different culture, hear multiple languages, and be surrounded by diversity, whilst feeling a connection between everyone at the event. Although we will all be from different backgrounds, cultures and faiths, we are all part of the World Scouting family, sharing the same values and being forever connected through this event. The Jamboree is intended to be inclusive, ensuring that anyone can be selected and attend regardless of their background. With this in mind all participants are expected to fundraise the money required themselves - £3,495 each. This would a considerable challenge to do alone, especially when you consider the fact that we are all aged between 13-15. Therefore we have been working together to come up with ideas for different ways that we can raise the funds and have agreed on a sponsored bike ride (amongst others) where, over the course of the next year, we will cycle the equivalent of the distance from Buxton to South Korea (which is 5,576 miles!).
The total amount we have to raise is £17,475 with each Scout raising £3,495, to cover expenses as broken down as follows:
£1,178 - Travel
£766 - Pre/Post events
£706 - 25 WSJ fee
£374 - Contingency
£257 - UK Contingent operations costs
£150 - UK Contingent kit and equipment
£45 - Preparation events for Unit Leaders and International Service Team
£12 - Unplanned Incident Management
£7 - Inclusivity contribution
