James’s story
As most who have followed Mason's story (www.mason21.uk) are already aware it has been a challenging year for both him and us as a family. If you haven't found his blog yet, please use the address above and seek out the positive elements to what may be described as a horrific start to someone's life.
To date, Mason age 1 has been fortunate enough to receive the following:
Four MRI’s, PET, CT & Echo heart scans,
Two biopsies, Bone marrow & additional tissue extracts,
Hickman line installation,
Six chemotherapy treatments consuming over 500hrs attached to IV machines,
Two blood transfusions,
Five-hour surgery, displacing his digestive system to remove a tumour,
Thirty Proton radiotherapy treatments.
To achieve the above he has endured 42 general anaesthetics.
We found ourselves in touch with Nicky from Cost Of Cancer earlier this year and they have supported us through a critical part of Mason's treatment journey as we moved between Cardiff, Bristol and Manchester to complete his schedule. The charity has been very helpful, Nicky genuinely cares, has been a great listener and source of information, helping us through the past couple of months. Nicky even made the effort to catch up with us in Manchester following Mason's final radiotherapy treatment - which was extremely thoughtful.
Cost of Cancer is a local charity, established in Porthcawl, South Wales aiming to help those going through similar treatment.
On 5th December, Cost of Cancer is hosting the event 'light for a life' in Porthcawl's Hi-Tide from 4.30pm. It is an open event, we will be there and invite you to join. Please find 'Cost of Cancer' on Facebook and support their page. We wanted to start a small impromptu campaign to fundraise for the charity ahead of this event. Masons treatment is finished for now....someone else has taken his place on the ward.
