What is Fitrana?
Zakat-ul-Fitr, (also known as Fitrana or Fitrah), is a form of charity given to the poor at the end of Ramadan.
Fitrana is due on every member of a household, including any children or elderly people. It is obligatory to pay before Eid salah.
How much is Fitrana this year?
In 2022 the rates are;
£5 for Fitrana (per person)
The amount of Zakat ul-Fitr for this year with Muslim Futures is £5.00 per person. It has been calculated at this price because it is the average price of a meal. The Zakat al-Fitr donations are used to provide food for the vulnerable.
Donate your Fitrana as soon as possible, so your donations can reach those in need.
When do we need to pay Fitrana?
For Fitrana 2022 we need to pay Fitrah by the end of the Ramadan, before the commencement of the Eid prayers at the latest.
What is the difference between Zakat and Zakat–ul-Fitr?
The first difference between Zakat and Zakat ul Fitr, or Fitrana, is eligibility. All Muslims must pay Zakat-ul- Fitr regardless of their age or financial status unless they honestly do not have the means to do so.
The second difference lies in the amount due. The amount attributed to Zakat al Fitr, or Fitrana, is very small - it rarely exceeds £5. It is the same amount for all, regardless of financial situation. Zakat, however, can amount to a larger amount because it’s 2.5% of all net savings, and varies from person to person.
The third and final difference lies in their due dates. Zakat can be paid at any time, with the only condition being that the earnings reflect one lunar years’ worth of net savings.
Zakat ul Fitr, however, goes hand in hand with Ramadan. It must be paid during Ramadan, before the Eid prayers at the very latest. This is a very specific time frame that all Muslims must abide to.
Where will my Fitrana go?
Your Fitrana will go directly to those who need it most, through our Feed500THOUSAND campaign appeal. We will feed the poor, before Eid, across communities impoverished by hunger and thirst. These unfortunate souls are victims through no fault of their own, either of war, drought, famine & displacement, natural disasters or poverty.
Your Fitrana can provide a nutritious meal to someone who would otherwise go without. Zakat al-Fitr is a duty upon every Muslim, as long as you can afford to pay it.
Your Zakat al-Fitr, is part of our 125% Zakat Policy, meaning that every penny of your donation will go directly to those in need.
Make sure that you pay your Fitrana of £5.00 before Eid salah, as is our obligation.
Mistakes, failures, not reaching our best; it happens to everyone.
But as He is just, He is also merciful. He puts in place systems for how to deal with our moments of weakness, even in the holiest of times.
There are certain forms of compensation that Muslims are liable to pay for not fasting - due to various reasons - during the month of Ramadan.
However, these penalties fall into two very different categories called Fidyah and Kaffarah.
As both Fidyah and Kaffarah donations are all in response to specific situations, rather than general obligation, these do not count towards your overall annual Zakat payment.
Instead, let us recognise these donations for what they are: generous provision based on the recognition of our own weaknesses offered in mercy and with grace.
Fidyah and Kaffarah is the compensation Muslims pay for not keeping a fast in the month of Ramadan.
In 2022 the rates are;
£5 for Fidyah (per day)
£150 for Fidyah (one month)
£300 for Kaffarah (per missed or broken fast)
Fidyah
Fidyah is owed when a Muslim cannot keep a fast due to various unavoidable factors.
Fidyah donations comprise of a donation to feed someone in need for each day of fasting missed. Should a fast be missed due to illness or travel, where you are able to make up for it after the month of Ramadan, then this should be repaid. A Muslim would be justified in donating Fidyah if they can’t fast because of age, illness or pregnancy.
The daily rate for Fidyah is £5 per fast missed, or £150 for the entire month of Ramadan.
This payment is enough to cover the cost of feeding 1 person with meals for 1 day, or for 30 days as appropriate.
Kafarrah
Translated into English as “expiation” or “atonement”, Kaffarah is the donation a Muslim would offer if they intentionally break a fast without a valid reason to do so.
Intentionally missing a fast carries a higher penalty than an unintentional breaking of the fast.
Where Fidyah is enough to feed one person, Kaffara is enough to feed ten people; this comes from the notion that the promise to fast in Ramadan is an oath made to Allah (SWT).
“God does not hold you accountable for your casual oaths, but He holds you accountable for the oaths which you make binding. The atonement for violating an oath is by feeding ten needy people”
The daily rate for Kaffarah is £300 for each fast missed during Ramadan.
This payment is enough to cover the cost of feeding 60 people in need or repaying 60 fasts as a forfeit for each fast missed.
