Ian’s story
As the Chairman of the Trustees of the 1st Wentwood Scout Group I coordinate the raising of funds that contribute to making Scouting an accessible and fun experience for our members. Outside of the normal fund-raising efforts to support day-to-day activities we also need to raise funds for the renovation of our headquarters building, the Pike Den, located near the village of Llanvaches, Newport in S Wales. The Pike Den was built by those involved with the 1st Wentwood Scout Group in the early 1980’s, and is now showing its age. We have plans for the renewal of the facilities in the building, including a new kitchen, new male and female bathrooms, a disabled toilet and a revamped meeting room. Alongside these developments we will also be undertaking improvements in the main hall to make it a more welcoming, warm and modern environment. The renewal has been made more urgent by subsidence of the rear building slab on which the internal walls stand. Although it is currently stable, we need to replace the slab to ensure it is fit for purpose for the next generation of Scouting adventurers.
Not included in the figure above is approx. £20,000 that we have already raised through fund raising and other activities over the last few years. We are using this platform as a way to push towards the full total we need in the hope that the work can start soon.
Can you help us to achieve our goal of making our building ready for the next 50 years of Scouting?
